On 2 October, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena supporters protested to halt the screening of Wake Up Sid in Mumbai and Pune. The MNS objected the use of the word "Bombay" instead of "Mumbai" in the movie.
Wake up Sid IMO is much closer to LAK than to DCH. It is a coming of age movie alright, but I somehow felt the romance b/w spolit rich kid and gritty mature gal was the point, his coming of age was just a consequence of this love story.
So is there nothing important to feel here? I disagree, for me the characterization was immensely strong, I felt for them. The friends were much more real rather than airbrushed. Lot of things were communicated in the movie in silences and expressions, rather than dialogues which was just beautifully done. Its more earthy, more believable than LAK (thats not a bad quality, we need more believable stories).
Hey Baddy:You were too harsh on Wake Up Sid! Agreed it was no best movie types, but it sure met my expectations. You know what to expect even before you sit down with the popcorn. And it was just that. Paisa Vasool type of movie. Remember Kanthasami!!!CheersDharu
Also my theory on why the 80s movies were under appreciated- they were good but they did belong to the much maligned action masala potboiler genre. Now since QSQT of the late eighties the balance has gone in the other direction,we tend to appreciate them more.
Now that you mentioned Vijeta, that brings up Shashi Kapoor the producer. There are very few actors who produced a range of movies that were so different from the range of movies they acted in. He remains quite an unsung hero today unlike the great directors he supported!

"Wake Up Sid" is a very good movie, though I think with a tiny bit of editing it could have been a great movie. Still, for anyone not familiar with Bollywood films, this would be a good entry for the unitiated.Sid (Ranbir Kapoor) is a rather loathsome character when the story begins. Although he's been in college for years and is expected to graduate soon, he's never worked hard and has horrible grades...and has not passed his exams. Most folks would see this as a wake-up call but not Sid. Sid is a completely spoiled and immature brat. He soon leaves school and returns home to his parents...and expects to lounge about the house having fun. He has no plans to work and treats his mother very poorly. Well, his father is not pleased and announces that Sid is coming to work for his company. Now Sid expects this means he'll be an executive and will have little to do but collect a paycheck...but Dad is NOT planning on doing this but instead wants Sid to start at the bottom in the company and work his way up. Sadly, Sid puts almost no effort into the job and soon loses this job. Dad is furious....but even more furious when he sees Sid treating his mother like his servant. Enough is enough...and Sid is thrown out of the house. Amazingly, at this time, Sid feels very sorry for himself and shows himself to be completely ungrateful. With no place to go, he shows up at Aisha's house. Aisha (Konkona Sen Sharma) went to school with Sid and agrees to let him stay. But she soon regrets this, as Sid just sits around her apartment all day...doing nothing and leaving the place a mess. And, when she comes home from a hard day's work, Sid hasn't made dinner and he expects HER to do it!! Despite Sid being a disgusting person, you know where the film is going next mostly because many Bollywood films follow a formula very closely....even more so than American movies. This brings me to a huge problem with the story....they made Sid so disagreeable and immature that he can be very off-putting AND his change at the end seems too extreme and comes too quickly. Still, despite this, the film does work...and the sweet ending still very sweet despite the awfulness of Sid!
Billed as a trilogy, the much-awaited big-budget fantasy adventure epic is written and directed by Ayan Mukerji and backed by filmmaker Karan Johar. The 48-year-old filmmaker said he is thrilled to present the movie to audiences worldwide in the four languages.
Mukerji, known for movies such as "Wake Up Sid" and "Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani", said "Brahmastra" is a dream that he has been nurturing for years. He added that he is blessed to have Rajamouli present his movie.
Kiara is depressed when her boyfriend cheats on her and Akash is under major debt after losing his company and all his money. The two meet while committing suicide and strike an unlikely friendship. When after another failed suicide mission, the two end up together in the hospital, the pair set a date for 20 days later to try again. Within these 20 days, the two end up travelling the world fulfilling many items on their bucket list and eventually fall in love. While the suicide bits are misleading and upsetting, the movie makes a strong case about how travel truly can be the perfect cure for many hiccup moments in life. A feel-good movie with fun travel stories, this movie like ZNMD also has a strong cast and beautiful life lessons.
The movie is ripe with misunderstandings and heartbreaks and all similar issues that crop up with undefined long-distance relationships but what it portrays very beautifully is how an Indian girl and boy make the best of their limited time in three of the best cities in the world. They roam around all the touristic places, explore the amazing food all the while falling in love with each other and the cities. Watch the movie to imagine yourself being given a limited time, a fabulous travel partner and a few nights to just be free.
Wake Up Sid can be described in half-a-dozen words: Rich Spoilt Slacker Dude Grows Up. This much-used theme has been the premise of several multiplex movies starring (the now-aging) Saif Ali Khan, who passes on his mantle to the younger, hunkier Ranbir Kapoor.
The movie is set in Bombay, not Mumbai, and the nomenclature brought the wrath of the Shiv Sena Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (thank you Geeta!) upon the head of producer Karan Johar, who ended up having to apologize. But the decision to keep the old name is completely understandable; cinematographer Anil Mehta creates a vibrant, colorful, happening, city that is as far from the grit and grind of Kaminey and Slumdog as foie gras is from pav bhaji.
Bollywood films, One would be lying to themselves if they said that Bollywood has had no impact on their lives. The movies big and small have played a major role in showing us the realities of our times or to help us imagine the way our cities are shaping. The fact that architecture and films deal with the visual communication of things is what makes films and architecture so close to each other. Unlike reality, architecture and cinema have the ability to take audiences away from reality and films are a great medium for architects to learn this from. While watching a film we are engaging most of our senses and hence although we see a 3-D space in 2-D we tend to visualize that space better.
Words would never do justice to this timeless class of Satyajit Ray. Pather Panchali is the first movie of the Apu Trilogy. Apart from the incredible story of Apu, the story tells the struggle of a villager in taking up his aspirations. The film is immensely popular for the fact that despite the low budget to make the movie, the film accomplished to tell the story so beautifully.
The story of Mohan, a project manager at Nasa who comes back to India to take his nanny who took care of him called Kaveri Amma back to the United States with him. The story starts with Mohan trying to find Kaveri Amma and persuading her to leave India and lead a better life with Mohan in the U.S. travels through the canvas of Indian Villages. The story shows the village of Menawali in Maharashtra as a village in Uttar Pradesh in the story. The story deals with a lot of landscape around the village and the functions of the village. We get to see the various problems the village faces, the issue of electricity and the lack of certain resources. The house in which Kaveri Amma and Mohan live in India is shown to be a beautiful vernacular house with a courtyard. The various houses shown in the movie show distinct characters according to the story narrated. This is a nice film to watch for architects to reflect on the varied landscape and functions of villages in India. 2ff7e9595c
